Embrace of the Dead

EMBRACE OF THE DEAD
By Ian Woodhead

embraceofthedead

This is not just another zombie story.

Story Synopsis:

As per the official synopsis, the story starts out normal enough.  There is an oopsie in a lab.  Things go wrong.  People die.  One scientist gets out and heads for his hometown to sort things out.  The lab disaster is spreading though, and it’s coming to his hometown too.

But there is more.  There is subplot going on.  Vibrant characters are woven into a tale that is much more than another zombie story.  This is a horror story that has zombies in it.

Review:

I fully confess that I am not generally a zombie story fan these days.  That is not to say that I don’t like them, that I don’t ever read them or watch them anymore.  I just generally don’t and I won’t go out of my way for one anymore.  They are zombie stories.  There is a virus/infection/plague/curse/what-have-you that makes zombies and people fight them and fight each other and fight to survive.  All very well, but I have become too critical of them to enjoy them.

But sometimes I have occasion to partake of one.

Ian offered this book free when you sign up for his mailing list.  Since I am a fan of many of his other works, it was only polite to read the gift.

I am glad I did.

This is not just another zombie story.

This is a story about a researcher full of guilt, cowardice, and personal flaws who desperately wants to set things right.  It is a story about a runaway who fell afoul of life and drug lords, fleeing back home to set her life right.  It is a story about thugs with a twisted sense duty and loyalty and the horrors that define their sense of what is right.  It is a story about the people of a small village and how ensuing events shape their lives.  It is a story about all of these things crashing together with zombies in the mix.

The constant tension, suspense, and gruesome goings on in this page-turner will do horrid things to your blood pressure.

Then, there is the ending.
The unexpected ending leaves you with a juvenile feeling of “uh uh!!!”
Which you will likely say out loud.

Whether or not you are a fan of zombie tales, this book is not to be missed.
