By Wrath James White
Graphic and Disturbing
Fifteen years ago, Joseph Miles was abducted, tortured, and almost killed by a serial killer with the taste for blood. But Joseph got away. He is the only survivor. Now Joseph has a problem – he is convinced that his torturer passed a virus on to him. A sickness that will turn him into a serial killer. Joseph must find a cure before the woman he loves— the woman who is currently chained to his bed— becomes his next victim.
The horror community has finally been blessed with the rerelease of Succulent Prey by Wrath James White. Succulent Prey is one of Wrath’s earlier novels and has been out of print for a while now. Too long. But now it is available again. And I cannot stress enough that this is the highest quality extreme horror.
Let me stress again: Extreme Horror.
I stress this because I find the synopsis to be a bit simplistic. This is much more than a story about an abuse victim’s decline toward being a serial killer. My original Amazon review, which is still there and is still valid, reads as follows:
Graphic and disturbing. Wonderfully written.
The psychological validity of the characters lends a realism to this disturbing story that will horrify any reader. Add to that the graphic sensuality of the characters’ depravity and brutality and you have a work that will shock the most hard-core horror fan.
Deeply thought provoking in its philosophical and psychological bent, horrifying in its graphic presentation of cannibalistic urge, this well written piece will captivate you and hold you hostage until well after the final word is read.
This was before the days of Bibliophilia Templum. This was when I was first discovering the depraved and brilliant works from Wrath James White. This was when I had to buy the book used because it was already out of print, but I wanted to read the follow-up book Prey Drive.
My first reading of this book back then evoked a sense of reverence for extreme horror. This was the well-written literary depravity I had been seeking.
Since we are talking about Amazon reviews, I would point out that the old reviews are on the new listing. And some of them are less than flattering. You will see them. So I would like to address some of them as part of the review.
First, the criticisms of too graphic and too shocking subject matter should be taken as a warning. The cannibalism and violence and related psychology of the characters is blatant and brutal. But it is not gratuitous. It is the story.
Likewise, criticisms of the characters should be taken with a grain of salt, as some seem to be made by readers who are comparing them to those in other books and in movies instead of taking them on their own merit and applying an understanding of human psychology. Perhaps the prospect of this realistic portrayal of human psychological frailty is too much for some readers. Perhaps they write it off as unrealistic to thwart any emotional or psychological response they would ultimately experience if they accepted it as believable. However, the characterization validates both itself and the sequences. Don’t skip over things. Everything is relevant. Every disturbing thing is ultimately relevant.
In conclusion, Succulent Prey is well-written, conceptually creative, graphic, brutal extreme horror. It is for extreme horror fans. It is a must for extreme horror fans.
Reviewer’s Notation: If you are new to the works of Wrath James White and are wondering if this is a good book to begin with: Yes, yes it is.
