ROCK AND ROLL DEATH TRIP
By Sean McDonough
A Fun and Gruesome Read
The Demons of the Four Points have been unleashed in the California desert. The roads run red as they rip a bloody path from Barstow to Primm. Ferocious. Merciless. Unstoppable.
Shock rocker Jackie Galindo was just looking to take a break from his life as the most beloved and reviled front man in all of rock and roll. He didn’t hit the road in search of car crashes, dismemberments, and a bloody fight to the finish, but that’s exactly what’s in store for him on…
The Rock and Roll Death Trip.
Retro title and cover art are the perfect wrappings for this quirky extreme horror novel. But the cartoonish creatures on the cover may not be as corny as you might think. McDonough’s manifestations of the Demons of the Four Points are wonderfully creative and shocking. And to prevent spoilers, I will leave it at that for now.
Rock and Roll Death Trip is a fun and gruesome extreme horror novel with a break-neck pace, gory sequences, dark humor, and even touching moments. It has some interesting psychological and emotional subtext, a well-developed supernatural bent, and vivid characters who are both entertaining and realistic (given who they are). But it is still Extreme Horror.
The opening chapter reads like a borderline splatterpunk short story. McDonough does not ease the reader into the extreme nature of this horror novel. No, he tosses you right in to the mix of suspense and violence and gore without a life jacket. I like that about his books. The story is brash and blatant and twisted as good extreme horror should be.
The ending was absolutely nothing like what I imagined it would be. All of my guesses were way off base. I’m not sure how I feel about that, but I suppose that is what I get for guessing. Don’t let the constant ebb and flow of the tormenting suspense seduce you into guessing. Just hang on and enjoy the ride.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story and look forward to more from Sean McDonough.
